D&D Studio Identity Concepts
2022 Wizards of the Coast | Paolo Vacala
Before the D&D team at Wizards of the Coast became known as "Imaginative Play" they did not have a studio identity, my assignment was to lay the creative foundation for a "D&D Studio" identity to come to life. This project developed my ability to present to creative leads, how to implement lots of feedback, and to understand branding considerations and limits for larger IPs.

Starting off, I knew down the road I would need to present initial concepts to studio heads, and given their busy schedules, the feedback session would need to be concise.‍ My research consisted of these visual flavor moodboards, which will be presented in tandem with rough designs and sketches.

From initial discussion with studio leads, concepts that reimagined or edited the D&D ampersand would not be used (except for concept 1). I was challenged to present completely unique symbols to represent the D&D studio. Also the concepts were not evocative, how do you want people to feel when they see your concept? My new directions would take this feedback into consideration.

Main points from round 2 was to explore studio typography more, the need to say D&D somewhere in the lockup, and adding a personal touch to concepts when pitching by naming the concepts. I enjoyed experimenting with texture and exploring negative space possibilities.

At this point, I was preparing for a final presentation and file handoff to studio leads. Considerations included staying with already established D&D colors, showing new moodboards to "tee up" the corresponding designs, and designing mock-ups of the logo in use, the application of the system on things like internal documents and templates.

Here is my final presentation! Each logo concept has a corresponding look and feel board to tee up the designs, and a mock-up slide that shows the mark as a system.

Overall, this experience was a great exercise in longitudinal design projects. In such an open ended request, I was able to spark conversation and interest in an identity for the Dungeons and Dragons Studio at Wizards of the Coast. The gelatinous cube logo concept eventually became the start of a entire consumer products style guide. View my project: Core Monsters Style Guide in Packaging.
